Zahidi dates are a semi-dry variety of date palm fruit grown primarily in California, Iraq, and Iran. The name comes from Arabic, meaning “small in quantity” — a nod to their smaller size compared to the more famous Medjool date. They are sometimes called “bread dates” because of their firm, chewy texture and mild, nutty sweetness that makes them exceptionally versatile in the kitchen.
Unlike the soft, caramel-rich Medjool, Zahidi dates have a dry, golden exterior and a chewy interior with a flavor that sits somewhere between butterscotch and dried apricot. They hold their shape well when cooked, which makes them a favorite among bakers and chefs.
Zahidi dates originated in the Middle East — most likely Iraq, where they have been cultivated for thousands of years. Today they are grown commercially in California’s Coachella Valley, where the desert climate mirrors the dry heat of their native region. At Desert Sun Dates in Sky Valley, California, we grow Zahidi alongside our Medjool and Barhi varieties using traditional hand-harvesting methods and no pesticides.
California Zahidi dates are typically harvested in late summer through early fall. Because of their semi-dry nature, they have a naturally longer shelf life than fresh Medjool dates — making them ideal for shipping farm-direct across the country.
Zahidi dates are mild and lightly sweet with a flavor profile that includes notes of butterscotch, brown sugar, and dried fruit. Their texture is firmer and drier than Medjool dates — less sticky, more chewy. The skin is thin and golden-yellow when fresh, turning a deeper amber as they dry.
If you have only ever had Medjool dates and find them too rich or sweet, Zahidi is often the variety people prefer. They are less intense, more snackable, and pair naturally with cheese, nuts, and savory dishes in a way that wetter varieties do not.
The most common question we get is how Zahidi compares to Medjool:
| Zahidi | Medjool | |
|---|---|---|
| Texture | Firm, semi-dry, chewy | Soft, moist, creamy |
| Sweetness | Mild, butterscotch-like | Rich, caramel-sweet |
| Size | Medium, oblong | Large, plump |
| Color | Golden amber | Dark brown |
| Best for | Baking, cooking, cheese boards | Snacking, stuffing, smoothies |
| Shelf life | Longer (semi-dry) | Shorter (high moisture) |
Neither is better — they serve different purposes. Most date lovers keep both on hand. For snacking, Medjool wins. For baking and cooking, Zahidi is the more practical choice.
Zahidi dates store exceptionally well because they are semi-dry. At room temperature in an airtight container they keep for up to three months. Refrigerated, they last six months to a year. For long-term storage, freeze them — they thaw quickly and taste nearly fresh. See our full date storage guide for complete instructions.
Our Zahidi dates are grown on our family farm in Sky Valley, California — the heart of the Coachella Valley date growing region. Hand-harvested each fall and shipped directly to you, they arrive fresher than anything you will find in a grocery store. We ship to California, Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, Washington, and Idaho.
