Coachella Valley Dates — Farm-Direct from the Date Capital of the U.S.

The Date-Growing Capital of the United States

The Coachella Valley in Southern California produces more than 95 percent of all dates grown in the United States. Stretching from Palm Springs east through Indio, Coachella, and into the desert communities of Sky Valley and Thermal, the valley floor sits below sea level and bakes under an average of 300 sunny days per year. The climate is as close to the date palm’s native Middle Eastern habitat as anywhere in the Western Hemisphere — which is why date cultivation here produces fruit that rivals anything grown in Iraq, Iran, or Morocco.

At Desert Sun Dates, our family farm sits in Sky Valley, California — one of the hottest corners of the Coachella Valley, where summer temperatures regularly exceed 115°F. We grow Medjool, Zahidi, and Barhi dates on land our family has farmed since 2016.

Why Coachella Valley Dates Are Different

Three things make Coachella Valley dates exceptional:

  • Heat accumulation: Date palms need extreme heat — a minimum of 5,000 degree-hours above 95°F to fully ripen. The Coachella Valley delivers this reliably every year. Almost nowhere else in North America does.
  • Dry air at harvest: Dates must dry on the palm after ripening. Humidity causes fermentation and mold. The valley’s desert air — often below 10 percent humidity in August and September — lets dates cure naturally on the tree, developing deep sweetness without intervention.
  • Mineral-rich soil: The ancient lakebed soils of the valley floor feed the palms. Combined with Colorado River irrigation, Coachella Valley palms produce some of the most nutrient-dense dates in the world.

The California Date Commission has represented Coachella Valley date growers since 1955 and maintains quality standards across the industry. The UC Cooperative Extension publishes ongoing agricultural research specific to the valley.

Desert Sun Dates — Our Farm in Sky Valley

We started in 2016 with 50 female Medjool palm trees purchased from Thermal, California. Every date is hand-harvested and shipped directly to customers without going through a distributor or retailer. Farm-direct matters: a grocery store Medjool may have been harvested six months ago and warehoused for weeks. Ours ship within days of harvest.

The Coachella Valley Date Farming Community

Desert Sun Dates is one farm among many in a valley with a century of date farming history. The industry began in the 1920s when the USDA imported date offshoots from Algeria and Iraq and planted experimental gardens throughout the valley.

Several Coachella Valley date institutions are worth knowing about:

  • Shields Date Garden in Indio has been a Coachella Valley landmark since 1924 — a retail destination and piece of valley agricultural history, not a direct-ship farm. Worth visiting if you are in the area.
  • The Riverside County Date Festival in Indio has run almost every February since 1921 and celebrates the valley’s agricultural heritage with tens of thousands of visitors each year.
  • The California Date Commission is the industry body that promotes California-grown dates and has represented Coachella Valley growers since 1955.

Visiting Coachella Valley Date Country

The best time to visit is September and October during the Medjool harvest. Farm stands along Date Palm Drive in Coachella and the surrounding roads sell freshly picked fruit straight off the palm.

Sky Valley, where our farm sits, is northeast of Palm Springs off Highway 62 — quieter and hotter than the valley floor. Real working desert, not resort country. Our dates are available online year-round. If you are local, reach out through our contact page.

Coachella Valley Date Varieties

  • Medjool Dates — Large, soft, caramel-sweet. The most prized date in the world and the Coachella Valley’s signature variety. Hand-selected at peak ripeness and shipped direct from our farm.
  • Zahidi Dates — Semi-dry, golden, butterscotch-sweet. Firm texture makes them ideal for baking, cooking, and cheese boards. See our full Zahidi guide.
  • Barhi Dates — Honey-sweet, thin-skinned, harvested in late summer. Available seasonally.
