Dates for Constipation: The Fiber Math, from a Date Farmer
Of all the questions people type about dates, this is the most common after pregnancy: do they actually help with constipation? Short answer from the people who grow them: yes — it’s the fiber, the numbers are real, and two to three dates a day is where most people land. Here’s the honest math.

The fiber math
Dates carry roughly 7 grams of fiber per 100 grams — a mix of soluble and insoluble. In practical terms: three Medjool dates ≈ 5 grams of fiber, about a fifth of the daily target most adults miss. The soluble fraction softens things; the insoluble fraction keeps them moving. That’s the whole mechanism — no magic, just fruit doing what fruit does, with water along for the ride (fiber needs water to work; skip it and fiber can backfire).

How people actually use them
- 2–3 dates with breakfast — the most common routine; gentle and steady beats heroic doses.
- Dates instead of the evening sweet — dessert that carries fiber instead of displacing it.
- For little kids and older folks — soft, chewable, naturally sweet; many families use chopped dates where prunes get refused. (Speaking of which: dates vs prunes is a fair fight — prunes carry sorbitol, dates carry more total fiber per satisfying bite. Plenty of households keep both.)
Fresh matters more than you’d think
A dried-out warehouse date is a candy pellet; a fresh one is fruit. Ours are current-season, hand-harvested on our Coachella Valley family farm, whole and unpitted, grown without pesticides (not certified organic — said plainly), no glucose coating, no sulfites. If a daily routine is the plan, fruit you look forward to is the routine that survives.

Common questions
How many dates a day for constipation?
Most people do well at 2–3 daily with plenty of water; more isn’t better if your gut isn’t used to fiber — ramp up over a week.
How fast do they work?
Fiber isn’t a switch; give a daily routine several days. Persistent problems belong to your doctor, not a fruit farmer.
Dates or prunes?
Both work, differently. Dates: more fiber per gram and (we’d argue) better taste. Prunes: sorbitol’s extra push. Alternate them and let your gut vote.
