Food to Live vs Desert Sun Dates: Bulk Pantry Warehouse or the Actual Farm?

Food to Live is a New York–based online bulk-foods retailer — nuts, seeds, grains, dried fruit, hundreds of products, sold through their own site, Amazon and Walmart. They’re good at what they are: a pantry warehouse with serious logistics and years of marketplace reviews behind them. We’re something else entirely — a small date farm in California’s Coachella Valley that grows, packs and ships one thing. If you’re comparing the two for your next box of dates, here’s the honest version.

Two different businesses that happen to sell the same fruit

Food to Live buys dates from growers and importers — their own product listings describe organic Medjool dates grown in Israel — packs them in a facility alongside hundreds of other products, and ships them fast. That’s the model: selection, price, and speed.

We grow these. Golden Zahidi Dates — Nutty, Less Sweet, Never Sticky | California Farm-Direct from our family farm in Sky Valley, California — from $15/lb, shipping included. See them →

We harvest Medjool and Zahidi from our own palms in Sky Valley, sort them on the ranch, pack them by hand the week they ship, and send them with shipping included to the lower 48. One farm, one harvest a year, nothing imported, nothing bought from anyone else.

Where Food to Live is genuinely the better choice

  • One-stop pantry stocking. If dates are one line on a list with almonds, quinoa and chia seeds, one cart beats two.
  • Certified organic. Their organic Medjools carry USDA certification. We grow without pesticides but are not certified, and we won’t imply otherwise.
  • Marketplace convenience. Prime-style shipping and thousands of accumulated reviews, if buying inside Amazon or Walmart is how you shop.

Where the farm wins

  • You know the origin precisely. Not a country — a grove. Our fruit is California-grown, from palms we can point at. Their listings describe imported fruit; origin can vary by lot, which is normal for a reseller and impossible for us.
  • Season, not warehouse age. We sell one harvest — picked this fall, held in our cold room, gone when it’s gone. Bulk inventory systems are built for year-round supply, which means fruit of less certain age.
  • Whole, unpitted, hand-sorted jumbos. Our Medjools ship whole with the pit in — it keeps the fruit softer and handled less. Jumbo grade runs 22–28 dates per pound, sorted by the person whose name is on the farm.
  • Price per pound at size, delivered. Our ladder runs $19 for 1 lb to $118 for 12 lb — $9.83/lb at the top, shipping included, nothing added at checkout.

The honest bottom line

If you want organic certification, a full pantry order, or the fastest possible box, Food to Live is a sensible buy and we’re glad they exist. If you want this season’s California Medjool from the farm that grew it — fruit with a face and a field attached — that’s the entire reason our farm sells direct. Try a 2 lb box next to theirs and let your own taste settle it.
