Jumbo Medjool Dates, Grown on Our California Farm
Jumbo is a size grade, not a marketing word. On a date farm, Medjools are sorted after harvest by how many fruit it takes to make a pound. Jumbo is the largest commercial grade — roughly 22 to 28 dates per pound, so each one runs about half an ounce. Below Jumbo sit Large, Medium and Small, and the smaller the grade, the more of the fruit is pit and skin rather than flesh.
We grow and hand-sort ours in Sky Valley, California, at the eastern edge of the Coachella Valley — the strip of desert that produces the large majority of American dates.
Why size actually matters
- More flesh per date. The pit is roughly the same size whatever the grade, so a bigger date is disproportionately more fruit.
- They stuff. A Jumbo has room for an almond, a walnut half, or a spoon of nut butter. A Medium doesn’t.
- They hold moisture longer. Larger fruit has less surface area relative to its mass, so it stays soft further into storage.
- They read as a gift. Nobody has ever been impressed by a small date.

What ours taste like
Deep caramel, closer to toffee than to sugar, with a soft skin that gives rather than cracks. They are picked at the tamr stage, when the fruit has ripened fully on the palm, and packed within days rather than pulled from a warehouse lot from last season.
They come whole, with the pit in. That is deliberate — the pit is what keeps a Medjool from drying out, and pitting is where most of the bruising happens.
Common questions
Is Jumbo the same as Large?
No. Jumbo is the grade above Large. A lot of sellers use “large” loosely as a description; on a farm it is a specific sort.
Are they organic?
They are grown without pesticides, but we are not certified organic. We would rather say that plainly than imply a certification we do not hold.
How long do they keep?
About three months in the pantry, nine months refrigerated, over a year frozen.
