Zahidi Dates: What They Are, How They Taste, and How to Use Them

What Are Zahidi Dates?

Zahidi dates are a semi-dry variety of date palm fruit grown primarily in California, Iraq, and Iran. The name comes from Arabic, meaning “small in quantity” — a nod to their smaller size compared to the more famous Medjool date. They are sometimes called “bread dates” because of their firm, chewy texture and mild, nutty sweetness that makes them exceptionally versatile in the kitchen.

Unlike the soft, caramel-rich Medjool, Zahidi dates have a dry, golden exterior and a chewy interior with a flavor that sits somewhere between butterscotch and dried apricot. They hold their shape well when cooked, which makes them a favorite among bakers and chefs.

Where Do Zahidi Dates Come From?

Zahidi dates originated in the Middle East — most likely Iraq, where they have been cultivated for thousands of years. Today they are grown commercially in California’s Coachella Valley, where the desert climate mirrors the dry heat of their native region. At Desert Sun Dates in Sky Valley, California, we grow Zahidi alongside our Medjool and Barhi varieties using traditional hand-harvesting methods and no pesticides.

California Zahidi dates are typically harvested in late summer through early fall. Because of their semi-dry nature, they have a naturally longer shelf life than fresh Medjool dates — making them ideal for shipping farm-direct across the country.

What Do Zahidi Dates Taste Like?

Zahidi dates are mild and lightly sweet with a flavor profile that includes notes of butterscotch, brown sugar, and dried fruit. Their texture is firmer and drier than Medjool dates — less sticky, more chewy. The skin is thin and golden-yellow when fresh, turning a deeper amber as they dry.

If you have only ever had Medjool dates and find them too rich or sweet, Zahidi is often the variety people prefer. They are less intense, more snackable, and pair naturally with cheese, nuts, and savory dishes in a way that wetter varieties do not.

Zahidi Dates vs Medjool Dates

The most common question we get is how Zahidi compares to Medjool:

Zahidi Medjool
Texture Firm, semi-dry, chewy Soft, moist, creamy
Sweetness Mild, butterscotch-like Rich, caramel-sweet
Size Medium, oblong Large, plump
Color Golden amber Dark brown
Best for Baking, cooking, cheese boards Snacking, stuffing, smoothies
Shelf life Longer (semi-dry) Shorter (high moisture)

Neither is better — they serve different purposes. Most date lovers keep both on hand. For snacking, Medjool wins. For baking and cooking, Zahidi is the more practical choice.

How to Use Zahidi Dates

  • Baking: Chop and fold into quick breads, muffins, granola bars, and cookies. They hold their shape and add sweetness without releasing excess moisture.
  • Cooking: Add to tagines, grain salads, and roasted vegetable dishes. Their dryness means they absorb cooking liquid beautifully rather than disintegrating.
  • Cheese boards: Their mild flavor pairs perfectly with aged cheddar, manchego, brie, and blue cheese.
  • Date paste: Zahidi dates blend into a smoother paste than Medjool — ideal as a refined-sugar substitute in sauces, energy balls, and glazes.
  • Snacking: Eat them plain, stuffed with an almond or walnut, or dipped in dark chocolate like our Medjool Candy Bar Bites recipe.

How to Store Zahidi Dates

Zahidi dates store exceptionally well because they are semi-dry. At room temperature in an airtight container they keep for up to three months. Refrigerated, they last six months to a year. For long-term storage, freeze them — they thaw quickly and taste nearly fresh. See our full date storage guide for complete instructions.

Frequently asked questions

Are Zahidi dates good for baking?

Yes — they are one of the best dates for baking. Their firm, low-moisture flesh chops cleanly and holds its shape, and their milder sweetness lets you control the sugar in a recipe.

Are Zahidi dates sweeter than Medjool?

No. Zahidi are milder and less sugary than Medjool, with a nuttier flavour. Medjool are the richer, more caramel-like, sweeter date.

Why are Zahidi dates drier than other dates?

Zahidi are a naturally semi-dry variety, with lower moisture content than soft dates like Medjool or Barhi. That is a characteristic of the cultivar, not a sign they have gone stale, and it is what gives them their long shelf life.

Are Zahidi dates healthy?

Like other dates, Zahidi are a whole fruit with natural sugars, fibre, and minerals such as potassium. Their lower moisture means a slightly denser bite, but nutritionally they sit in the same family as other dates and are best enjoyed in moderate portions.

Where can you buy Zahidi dates?

Zahidi are much harder to find than Medjool in a supermarket, because their low moisture and modest sweetness make them a baker’s date rather than a display date. We grow them and sell them direct — buy Zahidi dates farm-direct here, in 1 to 12 lb boxes with shipping included.

Are your Zahidi dates whole or pitted?

Whole, with the pits in. The pit is what keeps the fruit from drying out further and losing its texture — here is the longer explanation.
