Tamr (تمر): Fresh Ripened Dates, Farm-Direct from California
Tamr (تمر) is the Arabic word for the fully ripened date — the soft, sweet, sun-cured fruit that has anchored tables across the Middle East, South Asia and North Africa for thousands of years. If you grew up calling it tamr, tamar, or khajoor, and you’re looking for the real thing in America: a California date farm grows exactly this fruit, and ships it fresh.

The three stages — where tamr fits
Every date passes through stages on the palm, and Arabic names each one: khalal (crunchy, yellow — the fresh stage our Barhi waitlist exists for), rutab (half-ripened, soft and delicate), and tamr — fully ripened and naturally cured, the stage that keeps for months and carries the deepest caramel sweetness. Everything we ship year-round — jumbo Medjool and golden Zahidi — is true tamr, hand-harvested each late summer in California’s Coachella Valley, a desert climate remarkably like the date’s ancestral home.

Tamr on the table
- Breaking the fast: tamr and water is the sunnah of iftar — quick natural energy after a day of fasting.
- For suhoor: fiber-wrapped sugars release slowly — a few tamr with yogurt carries the morning further.
- Daily and generational: with coffee for guests, stuffed for gatherings, blended into everything from natural sweeteners to milkshakes.
The difference between good tamr and tired tamr is time: fruit that crossed an ocean and sat in a warehouse arrives hard and flat. Ours goes from our palms to your door in days — soft, glossy, current-season.

Common questions
What does tamr mean?
Tamr (تمر) is Arabic for the fully ripened, cured date — as opposed to khalal (fresh, crunchy) and rutab (soft, half-ripe). In everyday use it simply means “dates.”
What about rutab Medjool — the soft half-ripe stage?
Rutab (رطب) Medjool is the delicate, honey-soft stage before full curing — a short-season treat that must be kept cold and eaten fast. Most “rutab” sold online ships frozen or refrigerated at a steep premium. Our answer is simpler: current-season tamr shipped within days of our cold room is remarkably soft and glossy — the closest thing to rutab texture that keeps on your counter — and for the true fresh-stage experience, our seasonal Barhi is the fruit to wait for.
Is Medjool a tamr?
Yes — the Medjool you buy is tamr-stage fruit. Medjool is the variety; tamr is the ripeness.
Tamr vs khajoor — same thing?
Same fruit, different language: tamr is Arabic, khajoor (کھجور) is Urdu/Hindi. Both mean the dates on this farm.
