Khajoor: The Dates You Grew Up With, Grown in California

Khajoor (کھجور in Urdu, खजूर in Hindi) is simply the date — the fruit of the date palm, the one that breaks the Ramadan fast, sweetens kheer, and sits in a bowl at every South Asian grandparent’s house. We grow them: a family date farm in California’s Coachella Valley, shipping fresh, soft khajoor across the United States. If you’ve been searching for the kind you remember — plump, moist, nothing like the hard, dusty box-store fruit — this page is for you.

Fresh khajoor the way it should arrive: plump, moist, days from the cold room.

Fresh khajoor vs chuhara — know which one you’re buying

South Asian kitchens use the fruit in two forms, and they are not interchangeable:

We grow these. Golden Zahidi Dates — Nutty, Less Sweet, Never Sticky | California Farm-Direct from our family farm in Sky Valley, California — from $15/lb, shipping included. See them →

  • Khajoor (fresh/soft dates) — whole, moist, eaten as-is: Iftar, snacking, stuffed, blended into shakes and desserts. This is what we grow and ship.
  • Chuhara / chhuhara (dried hard dates) — dates dried until firm, used in cooking, pickles, and traditional preparations, often simmered in milk. We don’t make chuhara — it’s a different product, usually imported. (Though a drier date like our golden Zahidi gets partway there, and simmers beautifully in milk.)

Which of our varieties is the khajoor you remember?

  • Medjool — the big, soft, caramel one. If the khajoor of your memory was plump and melted in your mouth, this is it. The Iftar and guest-tray date.
  • Zahidi — golden, firmer, nuttier, less sweet. The everyday and cooking date: kheer, halwa, date-nut ladoo, or simmered in milk the way chuhara is used.
  • Barhi — the crunchy yellow fresh date of late summer, by seasonal waitlist. Families who know, know.

Buying khajoor by the box or the case

Dates move through South Asian households by the kilo, not the piece — Ramadan especially, when a family can go through a pound a week and hosts far more. Our boxes run 1–12 lb with shipping included, and bulk cases (24–100 lb) serve masjids, community Iftars, and stores — sealed 1 lb and 2 lb containers, ready to hand out or shelve. We ship from the farm to every state, usually arriving in 2–5 days, with pages for the communities we serve most: Houston, Chicago, Dallas–Fort Worth, New York, and the full Ramadan guide here.

Why farm-direct khajoor tastes different

The khajoor at most stores has crossed an ocean or sat in a distributor’s warehouse; by the time it reaches the shelf it’s a year from the tree and drying out. Ours is harvested once a year on our own land, kept in the farm’s cold room, and packed when you order — single ingredient, no syrup coating, no preservatives, naturally halal. That’s the difference you taste.
