Houston is home to the largest Muslim community in the American South, with an estimated 250,000–500,000 Muslims spread across Harris, Fort Bend, Brazoria, and Montgomery counties. The community spans Pakistani, Indian, Arab, Iranian, Turkish, Bangladeshi, Indonesian, Bosnian, West African, and African American families, anchored by some of the largest mosques in the United States — including the Islamic Society of Greater Houston network with multiple campuses, the Pearland Mosque, the Maryam Islamic Center, and the Champions Mosque. At Desert Sun Dates, we ship our hand-harvested California Medjool dates (tamr al-majhool, تمر المجهول) directly from our private date ranch to Houston families for Iftar, Suhoor, and Eid celebrations.

Houston’s Muslim community has been shaped by waves of professional immigration since the 1970s, drawn by the city’s energy industry, medical center, port, NASA, and broader engineering and finance sectors. The Islamic Society of Greater Houston (ISGH), one of the largest mosque organizations in North America, operates more than a dozen masajid serving the Houston metro. Sugar Land, Pearland, Spring, Katy, The Woodlands, Cypress, and Fulshear all host substantial Muslim communities with their own mosques, Islamic schools, and halal commercial corridors.
For Pakistani families across Sugar Land, Katy, and Pearland, Iftar tables feature samosas, pakoras, fruit chaat, biryani, haleem, and rooh afza — opened with dates and water. For Arab families in the Galleria area and west Houston, fattoush, kibbeh, mahshi, and grilled meats follow the dates. For Indonesian families in the medical center area, kolak, bubur sumsum, and es buah. For West African families across southwest Houston, thieboudienne and jollof. The date is the universal first bite at every table.

We deliver to Houston and surrounding Harris, Fort Bend, Brazoria, Montgomery, and Galveston counties — including Sugar Land, Stafford, Missouri City, Pearland, Friendswood, League City, Spring, Tomball, Cypress, Katy, Fulshear, Richmond, Rosenberg, and The Woodlands. For Ramadan, we recommend ordering 1–2 weeks before the start of the month.
