Dates and Gestational Diabetes: The Honest Carb Math
This is the intersection of two things people ask us about most — pregnancy and blood sugar — so let’s be unusually clear: we are date farmers, not clinicians. Gestational diabetes is managed by your OB, dietitian and your own glucose numbers — nothing here overrides them. What we can offer is the honest food math, because you deserve real numbers instead of internet vibes.

The numbers, plainly
- One large Medjool: ~66 calories, ~16–18 g carbohydrate, ~1.6 g fiber.
- Glycemic index: moderate, ~42–55 in published measurements — the fiber and fruit matrix slow the sugar, but the sugar is real.
- Translation: one date ≈ one carb serving in most GD meal plans. It can fit a carb budget; it can’t sneak past one.
What GD-managing moms commonly do (with their team’s blessing)
- One date, paired — with nuts, cheese or Greek yogurt; fat and protein flatten the curve further.
- Test it yourself: if you’re checking post-meal glucose anyway, one date with almonds after lunch is a one-day experiment. Your meter’s verdict beats any blog, including this one.
- Swap, never stack: a date instead of a sweet, never on top of one.
- Timing per your plan: many GD plans place fruit at snacks rather than breakfast — follow yours.
- The week-36 question: if you’re eyeing the six-a-day labor protocol with GD, that’s a direct ask-your-OB conversation — six dates is ~100 g of carbs and needs a professional’s yes.
If your team says skip them, skip them — the palms will still be here after delivery, and the fruit tastes even better when nobody’s counting.

Why the label matters more with GD
Much commercial dried fruit carries added glucose syrup or sugar dusting that never makes the front label. Ours is one ingredient — whole raw dates — no coating, no syrup, no sulfites, so the carb math above is the whole story. Fresher, softer Zahidi also runs a touch less sugary-tasting and slower-eating than Medjool, which some sugar-watchers prefer.

Common questions
Can I eat dates with gestational diabetes?
Many can, in counted portions inside their carb plan — and some plans say no. Your dietitian and your meter decide; the numbers above are what they’ll be working with.
Do dates spike blood sugar?
Less sharply than candy (moderate GI, fiber aboard), more than leafy anything. Pairing with protein/fat softens the curve measurably.
What about after delivery?
GD usually resolves postpartum — and dates are a beloved traditional food for new mothers. Something to look forward to.
