Are Dates OK for Diabetics? A Date Farmer’s Honest Answer
We grow dates for a living, so believe us when we say we’d love to tell you they’re a free pass. They’re not — dates are naturally sugar-rich fruit, and if you’re diabetic that matters. But “sugar-rich” isn’t the whole story either. Here’s the honest version, clearly labeled: we are farmers, not doctors — bring anything here to your doctor or dietitian before changing what you eat.

The honest numbers
One large Medjool date runs about 66 calories and 16 grams of natural sugar — that’s real, and three of them equal a dessert. But whole dates also carry fiber (about 1.6 g per date), which slows how fast that sugar lands. Measured glycemic index for dates comes out moderate — roughly 42–55 in most studies — lower than white bread, in the neighborhood of many fruits. Sugar with brakes on, not sugar in freefall.

The difference between a date and a candy bar isn’t the sweetness — it’s that the date’s sugar arrives inside intact fruit, with fiber, potassium and magnesium riding along. The difference between one date and six is still six times the sugar.
What careful eaters actually do
- Portion is everything: 1–2 dates, not a bowl — often paired with nuts or cheese, because fat and protein flatten the glucose curve further.
- Swap, don’t add: a date instead of dessert is a trade; a date after dessert is just more sugar.
- Test your own response: if you use a CGM or meter, one date with a handful of almonds is an easy experiment — your numbers beat any blog’s.
- Consider Zahidi: our golden Zahidi dates are firmer, less sugary-tasting, and slower eating than soft Medjool — many customers watching their sugar prefer them for exactly that reason.
Where fresh farm fruit fits
Everything we ship is whole, unpitted, single-ingredient fruit — no glucose coating, no added syrup, no sulfites. That matters here more than anywhere: much commercial dried fruit carries added sugars that never show up in a quick glance. With ours, the label math is just the fruit. Grown without pesticides on our Coachella Valley family farm (not certified organic — we say it plainly), current-season harvest, shipping included.

Common questions
Can diabetics eat dates at all?
Many do, in measured portions with professional guidance — the research on small servings generally shows manageable glucose responses. Your care team knows your numbers; we don’t.
What’s the glycemic index of Medjool dates?
Most published measurements land roughly 42–55 — moderate. Pairing with protein or fat lowers the practical impact further.
Are dates better than sugar for diabetics?
Replacing refined sugar with chopped dates in recipes brings fiber and minerals along — an upgrade, not a free pass. Total carbohydrate still counts.
