Are Medjool Dates Kosher? A California Grower’s Honest Answer

Short answer: whole, raw, unprocessed dates are generally considered kosher without certification — they are fruit, picked and packed, with nothing added. The longer answer matters if you keep strictly, so here it is from the people who actually grow them.

Why plain dates don’t need a hechsher

Kosher certification exists to verify processing: added ingredients, shared equipment, oils, syrups, glazes. A whole date that has been picked, sorted, and boxed has none of those. Major kosher agencies treat raw fruits and vegetables as kosher by nature. That is exactly what we sell — one ingredient, whole and unpitted, no glucose coating, no sulfites, no added sugar, packed on our own farm in Sky Valley, California.

To say it plainly: we do not carry a hechsher, and we won’t pretend otherwise. If your community requires certification on everything entering the kitchen, we may not be your farm — and we’d rather tell you that than sell you something you can’t use.

What careful buyers check

  • Pitted and processed dates are where certification starts to matter — machinery, coatings, and paste lines can involve other products. Ours are whole and unpitted.
  • Insect checking: many households split dates open before serving, per standard produce-checking practice. Whole unpitted fruit makes that easy.
  • Israeli-grown dates raise shmita and tithing questions in shmita years. Ours are California-grown, so those questions don’t apply.

Dates on the Jewish table

The date is one of the Seven Species of the Land of Israel, and on Rosh Hashanah it opens the Simanim before the meal. Many families break the Yom Kippur fast with dates because they restore blood sugar gently after 25 hours. A 24 lb case packs into forty half-pound gift bags for a congregation — about $5.70 a family.
