Breaking the Yom Kippur Fast with Dates: Why It’s Tradition and How to Do It Right
After 25 hours without food or water, what you eat first matters. Across generations and communities, the answer has often been the same: a date. Here’s why — and how to set out the break-fast table without thinking about it on an empty stomach.

“Close to ideal first food: quick, gentle sugars, the minerals a day without water takes from you, and nothing to prepare at the exact moment you have no patience for preparing anything.”

Why dates after the fast
A date is close to ideal first food: natural sugars that restore blood glucose quickly but gently, potassium and magnesium lost over a day without water, and enough fiber that the sugar doesn’t spike and crash. Soft, easy to chew, no preparation — which is exactly what you want at the moment the shofar sounds. Sephardic and Israeli families have broken the fast with dates for generations; the practice has spread to many Ashkenazi tables for the simple reason that it works.

A simple break-fast plan
- First minutes: a date or two and water — before coffee, before anything rich. Let your body land.
- The spread: our Medjool are soft and caramel-sweet straight from the box; firmer golden Zahidi hold up beautifully on a platter next to cheeses and nuts.
- For a crowd: a 12 lb box or a 24 lb case ($228, shipping included) covers a synagogue or family break-fast with plenty left for Sukkot the following week.
Yom Kippur begins the evening of September 19, 2026 and the fast ends after nightfall on September 20. Order by September 15 and your dates arrive settled and ready.
