Joolies vs Desert Sun Dates: Grocery-Shelf Brand or Farm-Direct Medjool?
Joolies is probably the date brand you’ve seen most often lately — sleek packaging, national grocery distribution, strong marketing, grown on a large organic operation in the Coachella Valley. We’re a small family farm in the same valley. Here’s the honest comparison, farmer to shopper.
A brand at scale vs. a farm at hand-scale
Joolies is a modern brand built on a large Coachella Valley organic ranch, sold through grocery stores and online nationwide, mostly in pitted convenience formats. The packaging is excellent, the distribution is everywhere, and the marketing budget is real.
We grow these. Fresh Jumbo Medjool Dates — Shipping Included | California Farm-Direct from our family farm in Sky Valley, California — from $19/lb, shipping included. See them →
Desert Sun Dates is the other end of the same valley’s spectrum: a small family grove in Sky Valley where one farmer hand-pollinates, bags, harvests, grades and packs the fruit — then ships it straight from the farm’s cold room to your door, usually within days of your order. No distribution chain, no retail shelf time, no middle margin.
Whole vs. pitted, fresh vs. shelf
Most Joolies you’ll find are pre-pitted — convenient, but a pitted date dries from the opening the day it’s cut. We ship whole, pit-in, on purpose: the pit is nature’s freshness seal, and jumbo fruit arrives soft and glossy. (Pitting takes ten seconds at home.) Grocery fruit has also typically traveled through warehouses and shelves for weeks; farm-direct fruit hasn’t. That’s not a knock on their quality — it’s the structural difference between retail and farm-direct, and it’s the difference you can taste.
Price per pound, honestly compared
Joolies’ retail packs typically work out to $13–20+ per pound through stores. Our jumbo Medjool runs $19 for 1 lb down to about $9.83/lb on the 12 lb box — shipping included — because there’s no retail markup stacked on a distributor markup. For bulk buyers, cases start at $228 for 24 lb with freight included.
Where each fits
Grabbing a pack at the grocery store tonight? Joolies is right there and it’s good fruit. Stocking your kitchen, gifting, baking through the holidays, or buying for a market or masjid? Farm-direct jumbo Medjool from the grower costs less per pound and arrives fresher. One harvest a year — this season’s fruit is selling now.
