Why dates for Hanukkah

Dates are one of the foods tied to the Land of Israel; the “honey” in the Seven Species is traditionally understood as date honey, the silan many families still pour over yogurt and challah. A box of dates carries that history into the gift without being a novelty. It also works for the practical reasons: it’s a real food, one ingredient, naturally vegan and gluten-free, and it is welcome at a table that is already full of fried and sweet things, because a date is a sweet that needs no cooking.

A note on kosher

We want to be straight about this: our dates are not kosher certified. They are whole, unprocessed fruit, one ingredient, with nothing added or coated. For some families that’s fine, and for others it isn’t, so we’d rather say so up front than after you’ve ordered. Ask us anything on the FAQ or call the farm at (760) 501-1845.

Ways to give dates for the eight nights

  • A host gift for a Hanukkah party. The 2 lb box ($29) goes onto the table that night. See hostess gifts.
  • A gift for a family. The 4 lb box ($49) is the one that gets shared across the week.
  • Something for a baker. The Baker’s Bundle pairs 4 lb Medjool with 2 lb of firmer Zahidi for $73, shipped.
  • Clients and staff. One invoice, a note on each box, many addresses: corporate and client gifts.

Dates for Tu BiShvat, January 22, 2027

After Hanukkah, the next holiday where dates belong on the table is Tu BiShvat, the New Year of the Trees, which begins the evening of Friday, January 22, 2027. Dates are one of the Seven Species of the Land of Israel, and many families set out a plate of the seven, or hold a Tu BiShvat seder, with dates beside the figs, pomegranates, olives and grapes. A box of fresh dates is an easy way to bring one of the seven to the table, to a class, or to a family far away.
