What “jumbo” means

Medjool dates are sold by size, and jumbo is the large end. A jumbo Medjool is thick and plump with a lot of flesh around the pit, which is why you get only 22 to 28 to the pound. Bigger fruit isn’t always sweeter, since sweetness comes from ripeness and curing, but it makes a more substantial bite for snacking, stuffing and gifts. Here is how to pick a good Medjool at any size.

Which size should you buy?

  • 1 lb ($19) or 2 lb ($29): to try them, or for a gift. The 2 lb is our most-given size. See our date gift boxes.
  • 3 to 5 lb ($40 to $58): a household that snacks and bakes. A month or two of dates for most families.
  • 6 to 8 lb ($67 to $84): big families, meal prep, small gatherings and holiday hosting.
  • 9 to 12 lb ($93 to $118): the best price per pound, for caterers, Ramadan households and anyone who never wants to run out. Dates keep for months in the fridge and longer frozen, so a large box isn’t a risk. See the storage guide.

Need more than 12 lb?

Our bulk cases run from 24 lb to 100 lb with shipping included. Restaurants, bakeries and stores can ask for pricing on our wholesale page, and Ramadan buyers can see Ramadan dates in bulk.

Prefer a milder date? Golden Zahidi sizes

Golden Zahidi is firmer and less sweet than Medjool, and it costs less per pound. It comes in the same 1 to 12 lb sizes: 1 lb is $15, 2 lb $23, 3 lb $31, 4 lb $38, 5 lb $45, 6 lb $52, and 12 lb $88, shipped. See Golden Zahidi, or try both in the Baker’s Bundle (4 lb Medjool and 2 lb Zahidi, $73).
