Why Are Dates So Expensive? A Date Farmer Opens the Books

Fair question — we hear it at the farmers market and see it typed into Google: why are dates, especially Medjool, so much pricier than other fruit? As people who grow them, we can answer precisely: a Medjool date is one of the most labor-intensive foods in American agriculture. Here’s where the money actually goes.

Tall date palms at Desert Sun Dates farm — every task happens 30 feet up
Everything that matters on a date palm happens 30–50 feet in the air, by hand.

Your date was touched by human hands a dozen times

  • Hand pollination. Date palms don’t self-pollinate reliably — a person climbs every female palm each spring and pollinates the flower clusters by hand. No bees, no shortcut.
  • Thinning. Climb again to cut away fruit so the remaining dates grow jumbo instead of small and cramped.
  • Bagging and tying. Climb again — bunches get protected from birds, rain and sunburn.
  • Harvest, in passes. Dates on one bunch ripen at different speeds, so pickers climb repeatedly over weeks, taking only what’s ready. In 110° desert heat, because that’s the only climate that grows them.
  • Hand-sorting and packing. Every date gets looked at before it gets boxed.

A palm takes 5–8 years to bear, drinks more water than any crop in the valley, and every critical task happens at the top of a ladder. You’re not paying for marketing — you’re paying for climbing.

We grow these. Fresh Jumbo Medjool Dates — Shipping Included | California Farm-Direct from our family farm in Sky Valley, California — from $19/lb, shipping included. See them →

Then why is farm-direct actually cheaper?

Store Medjool passes through packer → distributor → retailer, each adding margin to fruit that’s often a season old. Buying from the farm skips the line: our jumbo Medjool runs $9.83–19/lb delivered — current harvest, shipping included — and cases drop to $8.75–9.50/lb. Fresher fruit, fewer hands in the till.

And why they’re worth it

Pound for pound you’re buying dessert, energy bar and pantry sweetener in one whole fruit — see the 47¢-per-workout math and the sugar-replacement guide. A fruit that keeps for months without refrigeration wastes nothing you paid for.

Quick answers

Why are Medjool dates more expensive than Deglet Noor?
Bigger fruit, more thinning labor, more delicate handling — the jumbo grade literally costs more climbs. Full comparison here.

Are cheap dates lower quality?
Often older crop, smaller grade, or glucose-coated to mask dryness. Check the ingredient label — it should say “dates,” nothing else.

When are dates cheapest?
Right after harvest — late summer through fall — buying direct. Which is now, and is exactly why our storage guide pays for itself: stock up fresh, hold for months.
