Arizona Dates: Yuma, Dateland & the Black Sphinx — A California Grower’s Honest Guide
Arizona grows outstanding dates, and any California grower who tells you otherwise is selling something. The Yuma area — and the Bard Valley that straddles the Arizona–California line — is the heart of American Medjool production. Phoenix has a date heritage of its own, including an heirloom variety that exists almost nowhere else. If you searched for Arizona dates, here’s the honest lay of the land from a farmer one valley west, in California’s Coachella Valley.
Want this season’s dates shipped to Arizona? We’re one valley over — jumbo Medjool from $19, golden Zahidi from $15, bulk cases from $9.00–$9.50/lb, shipping included, typically 1–2 days to Phoenix, Tucson and Yuma.
We grow these. Golden Zahidi Dates — Nutty, Less Sweet, Never Sticky | California Farm-Direct from our family farm in Sky Valley, California — from $15/lb, shipping included. See them →
The Arizona date map
Yuma & the Bard Valley — Medjool country. Much of the Medjool in American grocery stores comes from the family farms of this region, most of it sold under the Natural Delights cooperative brand. Big, professional, excellent fruit. Martha’s Gardens in Yuma is the farm to visit if you want to see it up close.
Dateland — the famous stop on I-8 between Yuma and Gila Bend, where generations of road-trippers have pulled off for a date shake. (Ours is the Coachella Valley’s version: the date shake recipe.)
Phoenix & Scottsdale — home of the Black Sphinx, an heirloom variety born in a Phoenix neighborhood a century ago, and of Sphinx Date Ranch, the Scottsdale shop named after it.
Medjool dates: Arizona vs. California — is there a difference?
Less than the state line suggests. Yuma and the Coachella Valley share the same low-desert climate — brutal summers, mild winters, the conditions date palms love. The differences that matter to your box are about how the fruit reaches you, not which side of the river grew it: how big the operation is, how long the fruit sat in a supply chain, and whether a farmer’s name is on it.
