Female date palm offshoots, cut from our own fruiting palms in Sky Valley, California. Golden Zahidi each season, and a small number of Medjool each year by waitlist. Every one is true to variety and female, because it’s a direct copy of a mother palm we’ve harvested for years.

What’s available

Variety Fruit Availability
Zahidi (female) Golden, firm, nutty; a heavy, reliable bearer and a handsome landscape palm Each season, by reservation
Medjool (female) Large, soft, caramel-sweet: the “king of dates” Limited each year, waitlist only

We keep most of our Medjool offshoots for our own new plantings, which is why they’re limited. Zahidi is the easier one to get, and for many backyard growers the better first palm. More on the variety in The Zahidi Date Palm: Grower’s Notes.

How it works

  1. Reserve. Call or text (760) 501-1845 with the variety you want and where it will be planted. Medjool requests go on the waitlist in order.
  2. We set a dig date. Offshoots are cut in the warm-soil windows: late winter through spring, and early fall after harvest. We avoid midsummer, when a fresh-cut offshoot loses water fastest.
  3. Pick up at the farm, by appointment. Your offshoot is dug the same day you collect it, trimmed, tied and with its roots wrapped. We’ll send directions when you book. There are no drop-in visits or farm tours.
  4. Plant it that day. You’ll leave with our care sheet. The full method is in How to Plant a Date Palm Offshoot.

Where they can go: our offshoots are sold for planting in Riverside County, California. Pricing depends on size and variety; ask when you reserve.

Fresh-cut offshoots: what to expect

A fresh-cut offshoot has to grow new roots before it can keep up with the desert sun, so the first months matter. Plant it the same day, keep the basin moist, and keep its leaves tied up and shaded while it roots. Some outer leaves will brown; a new spear leaf pushing from the center is the sign it has taken. With care, a well-rooted offshoot usually begins fruiting several years after planting. It has to be pollinated each spring: see How Dates Are Pollinated by Hand.

Why an offshoot and not a seedling

Date palms grown from seed are not the variety the seed came from, and roughly half turn out male and never fruit. The only way to get a true Medjool or Zahidi is an offshoot from a known female, or a lab-grown tissue-culture plant. Some nurseries sell seed-grown palms as “Medjool.” Ask any seller where the palm came from. Ours came from these mother palms, and you can taste their fruit before you buy. Quick Answers

Are your offshoots female? Yes. Each one is cut from a female palm, so it is female too.

Do you ship offshoots? No. They’re too heavy and too perishable to ship well, so pickup at the farm is by appointment only.

How long until my offshoot fruits? Usually several years after planting, sooner for larger offshoots, and only with pollination each spring.

Do you sell male date palms? Not at this time. You don’t need a male to get fruit: hand pollination works.

Can you plant it for me? We can help with planting and setup as part of date palm consulting.

Reserve an offshoot

Pick “Reserve a Zahidi offshoot” or “Join the Medjool offshoot waitlist” and tell us where it will be planted. We’ll reply with sizes, price and a dig date.

Photos help. After you send this, you can text pictures of the palm to (760) 501-1845.
