Rancho Meladuco vs Desert Sun Dates: An Honest Comparison (2026)

I own Desert Sun Dates, so read this knowing I sell one of the two things being compared. Every figure below came off their own website, re-checked on 27 August 2026, and I have linked so you can check it rather than take my word.

Short version: Rancho Meladuco is a genuinely excellent organic farm with a better brand than mine. They are certified organic and I am not. If certification matters to you, buy theirs and stop reading. What we do better is the delivered price and the number of varieties, and I will show the arithmetic.

Where they are genuinely better

They are certified organic and we are not. That is a real difference and not one I am going to talk around. USDA organic certification is an audited system covering inputs, soil amendments, and recordkeeping. They hold it. We do not. We grow without pesticides, which is a narrower claim, and we say the narrower thing because it is the one we can stand behind. If organic certification is your buying criterion, they win and there is nothing further to discuss.

Their brand is better than ours. Bon Appétit called their dates the world’s best. They have a cookbook, a retail shop, gift bundles, subscriptions, an heirloom variety box, and collaborations with other food producers. That is years of careful work and it shows. We are a farm with a website.

They sell things we do not. A subscription, a proper gift box, rare varieties in a sampler. If you are buying a present rather than buying fruit, their range is built for that and ours is not.

Their “grinders” are a good idea. Selling the cosmetically imperfect fruit cheaply instead of discarding it is exactly what a farm should do, and I respect it.

Where we are better

Delivered price. This is the one that matters and it is easy to check.

Their shipping is a $9.99 flat rate for continental US orders. Ours is inside the price. So the only fair comparison is what lands on your doorstep, not the sticker.

Their smallest box is 2 lb — $21.00 conventional or $23.00 organic. Add $9.99 and that is $30.99 or $32.99 delivered, which works out at $15.50 or $16.50 a pound. Our 2 lb is $29 delivered, $14.50 a pound. At the other end, their 15 lb at $140 plus shipping is $149.99, or $10.00 a pound; our 12 lb is $118, or $9.83 a pound, with nothing added.

So we are cheaper, but let me be accurate about the size of it: two to four dollars on a small box, and about seventeen cents a pound at volume. Not a landslide.

The bigger practical difference is that our number is the number — nothing is added at checkout — and that we sell a single pound for $19 delivered if you only want to taste a farm’s fruit before committing to a box.

Alaska and Hawaii. Their shipping terms cover the continental US and exclude Alaska and Hawaii. We ship there — rated at checkout, because it genuinely costs more, and we would rather quote it honestly than pretend otherwise.

Three varieties, not one. We grow Medjool, Zahidi and Barhi. Zahidi in particular is a different fruit — golden, firm, nutty, and much better for baking and savoury cooking, which we cover in our Zahidi vs Medjool comparison. Very few farms sell it as whole fruit at retail.

You can visit the actual grove. Their shop is in Costa Mesa, in Orange County, roughly a hundred miles from the Coachella Valley. That is a sensible place to put a store — it is where the customers are. But it is a store, not a farm.

Which should you buy?

Buy Rancho Meladuco if you want certified organic, you are buying a gift, you want a subscription, or you want to try rare varieties in a sampler box. Their range and their presentation are better than ours and I would not pretend otherwise.

Buy from us if you want the lowest delivered price, you want to know exactly what you are paying before checkout, you want Zahidi or Barhi as well as Medjool, you are in Alaska or Hawaii, or you want to buy from the person who picked the fruit.

Both of us are actual farms in California growing actual dates. That already puts either choice ahead of most of what is sold online, a great deal of which is bought in bulk and repacked by companies that have never been near a palm.
