Iftar Date & Banana Smoothie Recipe | Ramadan Drink with Medjool Dates

Few drinks restore the body more gently after a day of fasting than a cold, creamy date and banana smoothie. The natural sugars in jumbo Medjool dates (tamr al-majhool, تمر المجهول) lift blood sugar steadily — without the sharp spike of refined sweets — while the milk and banana provide hydration, potassium, and a satisfying fullness. This recipe is a Ramadan staple in Muslim households from the Arabian Peninsula to South Asia, often appearing on the Iftar table within the first few minutes after the maghrib azaan.

Why This Drink Works for Breaking Fast

The traditional way to break fast — following the prophetic sunnah (سنة) — is with dates and water. This smoothie honors that tradition while making it easier on a depleted body. Medjool dates from our private date ranch in California’s Coachella Valley contain glucose, fructose, fiber, magnesium, potassium, and B vitamins — exactly what the body needs after 12+ hours without food or water. Blended with cold milk and a ripe banana, the mixture is digested gradually, preventing the energy crash that often follows sugary Iftar drinks.

Ingredients (Serves 2)

  • 6–8 jumbo California Medjool dates (tamr al-majhool), pitted
  • 2 cups cold whole milk (or laban, almond milk, or oat milk)
  • 1 large ripe banana, peeled and sliced
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom (hail, هيل)
  • Optional: 1/4 cup plain yogurt or labneh for thickness
  • Optional: 1/2 teaspoon rose water (maa ward) or 1 drop saffron-infused milk
  • Optional: A handful of ice for a colder, frothier drink
  • Optional garnish: crushed pistachios or slivered almonds

Instructions

  1. Soak the dates briefly. If your Medjool dates are particularly soft and fresh from our ranch, you can skip this step. If they are slightly firm, soak them in 1/4 cup of warm milk for 5 minutes to soften.
  2. Combine all ingredients in a blender — dates, milk, banana, cardamom, optional yogurt, and optional rose water.
  3. Blend on high for 60–90 seconds, until the mixture is completely smooth and the dates are fully incorporated. There should be no chunks of date remaining.
  4. Taste and adjust. If you prefer it sweeter, add 1–2 more dates and blend again. If you prefer it thinner, add a splash of milk.
  5. Pour into chilled glasses and garnish with crushed pistachios or slivered almonds. Serve immediately.

Variations Across the Muslim World

  • Khaleeji style: Use full-fat laban, add saffron-infused milk, and skip the banana. Garnish with crushed cardamom pods.
  • South Asian “Ramadan special”: Add a tablespoon of rooh afza syrup and a pinch of basil seeds (tukmaria). Blend with extra ice.
  • Egyptian style: Skip the banana and replace it with a tablespoon of qamar al-din (apricot leather) softened in warm water.
  • Somali “caano fadhi”: Soak dates in warm camel milk or cow milk for 1 hour, then crush rather than blend — a traditional Ramadan drink.
  • Modern smoothie bowl: Reduce the milk by half and pour into bowls. Top with sliced banana, granola, more chopped dates, and a drizzle of tahini.

Suhoor Variation

For pre-dawn Suhoor (سحور), make this smoothie thicker and more sustaining. Add 1/4 cup rolled oats, 1 tablespoon almond butter, and a tablespoon of chia seeds. The slow-release carbohydrates from the oats and the protein from the almond butter will help carry you through the long fasting day.
