Iftar Date & Banana Smoothie Recipe with Medjool Dates
After a long day of fasting during Ramadan, the moment of iftar (إفطار) calls for something gentle on the stomach, hydrating, and rich in slow-release energy. This date and banana smoothie — built around premium California Medjool dates (tamr al-majhool, تمر المجهول), ripe banana, and milk — is exactly that: a five-minute drink that restores blood sugar, replenishes electrolytes, and nourishes the body with healthy fats, fiber, and protein. It is also the perfect base for suhoor (سحور), giving you steady energy for the long day of fasting ahead.
Why Dates & Banana Are the Perfect Iftar Pair
Medjool dates are roughly 70% natural sugar — primarily glucose and fructose — which is absorbed quickly into the bloodstream to gently restore energy after a day of fasting, without the harsh spike-and-crash of refined sugar. They are also rich in potassium, magnesium, and fiber. Bananas add additional potassium and slow-burning carbohydrates. Milk (or any halal milk alternative) provides protein, fat, and hydration. Together, this trio is a near-perfect Iftar opener — gentle, balanced, and traditional. Across Muslim cultures, similar drinks have been part of Ramadan for centuries: from Yemeni date-and-milk drinks to the Somali caano fadhi, the combination of dates and milk is woven into Muslim breakfasting traditions everywhere.

Ingredients (Serves 2)
- 6 jumbo California Medjool dates, pitted
- 1 large ripe banana (frozen, for a thicker smoothie)
- 2 cups cold whole milk, almond milk, oat milk, or coconut milk
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom (hayl, هيل) or 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 2 tablespoons natural almond butter or peanut butter (optional, for a fuller, more sustaining drink)
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
- A pinch of sea salt
- 1/2 cup ice cubes (omit if using frozen banana)
Instructions
- Soak the dates in warm water for 5 minutes if they feel firm. (Premium Medjool dates fresh from our farm rarely need this, but it helps with older or drier dates.) Drain.
- Blend everything together. Add the dates, banana, milk, cardamom or cinnamon, optional nut butter, vanilla, sea salt, and ice to a high-speed blender. Blend for 60–90 seconds until completely smooth and creamy.
- Taste and adjust. If you want it sweeter, add another date. If thicker, add more frozen banana or ice. If thinner, add a splash more milk.
- Serve immediately in tall glasses. Optionally garnish with a sprinkle of crushed pistachios or a thin slice of date on the rim.
Variations
- Khaleeji-inspired: Use cardamom and a pinch of saffron threads soaked in a tablespoon of warm milk. Reminiscent of Gulf-style date drinks.
- Moroccan-inspired: Add 1/2 teaspoon of orange blossom water (maa zahr) and a pinch of cinnamon.
- South Asian-inspired: Add 1/4 cup of cooked vermicelli or a tablespoon of rooh afza for a sheer khurma–style twist.
- Protein-packed (for athletes): Add a scoop of vanilla halal-certified whey or plant protein.
- Suhoor version: Add 1/2 cup rolled oats and a tablespoon of chia seeds. Blend into a thicker, more sustaining drink.
- Iced coffee twist: Add 1 shot of espresso or 1/2 cup cold brew coffee (great after Eid, less ideal during fasting hours).
Tips for the Best Smoothie
- Use ripe bananas. Bananas with brown spots blend more smoothly and are naturally sweeter.
- Freeze ripe bananas in advance. Peel, slice, and freeze ripe bananas in zip-top bags. They last 3 months and make smoothies effortless during Ramadan.
- Pre-pit your dates the night before. Saves precious minutes when breaking fast.
- Use cold milk. Cold milk plus frozen banana yields a thicker, more dessert-like smoothie.
