Columbus, Ohio is home to the second-largest Somali American community in the United States — after Minneapolis — alongside vibrant Pakistani, Indian, Arab, Bangladeshi, West African, and African American Muslim communities. Estimates place the Columbus metro Somali population at 60,000+, with a network of mosques, halal grocers, restaurants, and Islamic schools concentrated on the city’s north and northeast sides. At Desert Sun Dates, we ship our hand-harvested California Medjool dates (tamr al-majhool, تمر المجهول) directly from our private date ranch to Columbus families for Iftar, Suhoor, and Eid celebrations.

Somali families began resettling in Columbus in the late 1990s, drawn by affordable housing, secondary migration from other refugee resettlement cities, and the strength of family networks. Over the past two decades, the community has grown into one of the largest concentrations of Somali Americans in the country. The Northland and Morse Road corridors host Somali businesses, restaurants, halal grocers, and the Abubakar Asiddiq Islamic Center, while masajid like Masjid Omar Ibn El-Khattab and the Noor Islamic Cultural Center anchor a broader Muslim community spanning Hilliard, Dublin, Westerville, Reynoldsburg, and the suburbs.
For Somali families across the Northland and Morse Road areas, Iftar tables open with dates and water — followed by sambusa, bariis iskukaris (Somali rice), suqaar, and maraq stews, often closed with sweet tea and homemade pastries. For Pakistani families across Hilliard, Dublin, and Westerville, samosas, pakoras, and biryani follow the dates. For Arab and West African families, traditional spreads complete the meal. The date is the universal first bite.

We deliver to Columbus and surrounding Franklin, Delaware, Fairfield, Licking, Pickaway, and Madison counties — including Hilliard, Dublin, Worthington, Upper Arlington, Bexley, Westerville, Reynoldsburg, Pickerington, Pataskala, Grove City, Powell, and the broader Central Ohio region. For Ramadan, we recommend ordering 1–2 weeks before the start of the month.
