A date needs nothing added — it’s one of the sweetest whole foods on earth exactly as it comes off the palm. But not every bag on a shelf is just dates: some commercial fruit is coated with glucose or rice syrup for shine, misted with oils, treated with sulfites, or pasteurized to stretch a long distribution life. Ours is the fruit and nothing else, because it goes from our palms to our cold room to your box. Here’s the honest breakdown.

Do dates have added sugar?
Whole dates from a farm: no. The sweetness is entirely the fruit’s own — roughly two-thirds natural sugars by weight, which is why dates work as a one-to-one sugar replacement in baking. Where added sugar sneaks in is processed date products (some chopped dates are rolled in rice flour or oat flour, some snack dates get a syrup glaze) and, occasionally, shelf fruit coated for gloss. Check the ingredient line: if it says anything beyond “dates,” that’s your answer.
What “no preservatives” means on this farm
- No sulfites. Dates don’t need them — sugar and low moisture are nature’s preservatives, which is why dates kept caravans alive for centuries.
- No coatings. No glucose syrup shine, no oil mist. If our fruit looks matte and occasionally shows white powder, that’s sugar bloom — natural, and a sign of real fruit.
- No pasteurization, no steam “refreshing.” Old fruit is sometimes rehydrated to look soft. Ours is soft because it’s this season’s harvest, kept cold on the farm.
Grown without pesticides — and what we won’t claim
We don’t spray our grove. Our soil program is clean-feedstock compost — and never biosolids, which we think anyone putting fruit in their mouth deserves to know is even a question. The grove sits isolated in Sky Valley’s dry heat, which is most of the pest control a date palm needs.
What we won’t claim: “certified organic.” We’re not certified. “Grown without pesticides” is a narrower statement than certification and it’s the only one we’re entitled to make — so it’s the only one we make. If a certificate matters to you more than the practice, we’re honestly not your farm; if the practice is the point, ask us anything about ours.
The whole list, then
Ingredients in every box we ship: dates. Washed, hand-sorted (only the largest, best fruit of the harvest goes to market), packed on the farm, cold-stored, shipped with nothing added at any step. That’s the entire supply chain, and we’re every link in it.
Common questions
Are dates healthy if they have that much natural sugar?
Dates are high in natural sugar and also in fiber, potassium and polyphenols — the fiber slows the sugar down in a way refined sugar can’t match. We wrote honest pieces on dates and diabetes and dates as workout fuel rather than pretending candy-sweet fruit is a vegetable.
Why do some store dates look shiny?
Often a glucose-syrup or oil coating applied for appearance. A farm date is matte, sometimes with a dusting of its own crystallized sugar.
Do unsprayed dates spoil faster?
No — spraying isn’t what preserves a date; its own sugar is. Stored right, our fruit keeps for months: the full numbers are in our date storage guide.
