For Muslim families across America, dates — known in Arabic as tamr (تمر) — are far more than a fruit. They are the traditional way to break the daily fast during Ramadan, the sweet companion to morning coffee at suhoor (سحور), and a food woven into prayer, gathering, and gift-giving throughout the year. At Desert Sun Dates, we hand-harvest premium Medjool, Zahidi, and Barhi dates on our private date ranch in California’s Coachella Valley and ship them direct to your door — fresh, soft, and ready for your iftar (إفطار) table.

The date palm, or nakhla (نخلة), is mentioned more than any other fruit-bearing plant in the Quran. Generations of Muslims have followed the sunnah (سنة) of breaking the daily fast with dates — a practice rooted in the example of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The combination of natural sugars, fiber, potassium, and magnesium in dates makes them uniquely suited to gently restore the body after a day of fasting, lifting blood sugar without the crash that processed sweets cause.
Whether your family traces its roots to Yemen, Lebanon, Palestine, Syria, Egypt, Morocco, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Somalia, Indonesia, or anywhere else in the global ummah, dates connect you to a tradition stretching back fourteen centuries — and to a fruit that was already ancient when the Prophet ﷺ recommended it.

Medjool dates — known in Arabic as تمر المجهول (Tamr Al-Majhool, literally “the unknown date”) — originated in the Tafilalt region of Morocco and are widely considered the king of dates. They are the largest commonly available variety, with a deep mahogany color, soft caramel-like flesh, and a rich sweetness that intensifies after a day of fasting.
Among American Muslim families, Medjool dates are the most popular choice for Iftar trays, Ramadan gift boxes, and Eid celebrations. Their large size makes them ideal for stuffing with almonds, walnuts, or labneh; their natural sweetness lets them stand alone alongside Arabic coffee or rose-scented water; and their soft texture is gentle on a stomach that has been empty all day.

The crown jewel of our ranch. Soft, jumbo-sized, and deeply sweet — the most popular date for Iftar across the Muslim world.

Originally from Iraq, Barhi (al-barhi, البرحي) dates are smaller, with a creamy butterscotch-like sweetness. Beloved in Khaleeji and Iraqi households, they are often eaten fresh in their golden khalal stage or fully ripened to soft brown.

A firmer, drier date with golden-amber color and a nutty, lightly sweet flavor. Zahidi (al-zahdi, الزهدي) dates are favored for cooking, date syrup (dibs, دبس), date paste, and as a lower-sugar everyday snack.
We ship Medjool dates from our private ranch in the Coachella Valley to Muslim communities in every major American metropolitan area. Visit your city’s page for local Iftar traditions, mosque references, and shipping details:
Beyond eating dates straight from the box, our recipe library includes traditional and modern dishes from across the Muslim world:
Yes. Whole Medjool, Barhi, and Zahidi dates are halal by nature — they contain only one ingredient: the date itself. We do not coat our dates with glucose syrup, glazing oils, or any non-halal additive. They are simply fruit, hand-harvested and packed on our private ranch.
Stored in a sealed container at room temperature, our Medjool dates stay fresh for up to two months. In the refrigerator, they last six months or more. For long-term storage — for example, stocking up before Ramadan — Medjool dates can be frozen for over a year without losing flavor or texture.
Ajwa dates (‘ajwa, عجوة) are a small black date grown only in the region of Madinah, Saudi Arabia, and we have great respect for their place in Islamic tradition. We do not grow Ajwa — our private ranch produces the Medjool, Barhi, and Zahidi varieties that thrive in the California climate. For families who love both, Medjool is the natural complement to Ajwa: large, sweet, and perfect for Iftar trays.
For a family of four breaking fast nightly, plan on roughly 1–2 pounds of Medjool dates per week of Ramadan. If you also host Iftar guests, distribute gift boxes, or use dates for suhoor and baking, double that estimate. Ordering early in the month — or before Ramadan begins — ensures the freshest possible dates and avoids shipping delays during peak season.
Absolutely. A box of California-grown Medjool dates from our private ranch is one of the most thoughtful gifts you can send for Ramadan, Eid al-Fitr, Eid al-Adha, weddings, the birth of a child, or to honor a respected guest. We ship to any U.S. address with the gift recipient’s information.
